Web 2.0 Tools for Language Teaching



Web 2.0 is the term given to describe a second generation of the World Wide Web that is focused on the ability for people to collaborate and share information online.


1-Dotsub  ( http://dotsub.com/ )



          Dotsub allows both teachers and students a vast video capacity with subtitles of lots of languages. Thanks to this site, teachers and students can create their own profiles, upload videos, make up subtitles and improve their comprehension on understanding language. Beside improving your target language, you have also opportunities to wacth scientific videos. That is to say, by watching these videos, you do no only improve your target language, but also have an idea of multiple topics.



2-Forvo ( http://tr.forvo.com/ )

          Forvo is one of the largest pronouciation guide for learners. this site contains languages from the most known to inconspicuous ones. Furthermore, learners can sign up the site and share their own pronounciation records for other learners. Members of the site can upload not only their own mother language’s records but also their target language. Forvo includes more than 2.3 million words and pronounciations, and 314 languages, which provides learners a good chance to improve their pronounciation skills. The capacity of the site is so broad that you can even learn the pronounciation of the names of Polish towns and villages





3-FSI Language Courses  ( http://fsi-languages.yojik.eu/ )

          Fsi-languages is a site which consists of written and vocal language sources for learners. In this site developed by the Foreign Service Institute, the sources are a bit old but pretty useful. Moreover, it is complimentary. From Arabic to Vietnamese, the site has a great many of tapes approximently 20 minute long for learners.
  




4- Fraze.It ( http://fraze.it/ )

          Thanks to fraze.it, learners can find sentences containing a specific word that the learners want to learn. Site has more than 100 millions of sentences. Learners can filter sentences according to forms, tenses, rules, zones and contexts. This site comprises English, French, Italian, Spanish German and Portuguese. Namely, fraze.it is the right site for those who want to learn how to use a word in a sentence.






5-Babbel (http://www.babbel.com/)

          Babbel is one of the most used and popular sites in foreign language learning. It offers grammatic, thematic, vocabulary, writing and listening courses for learners.With babbel.com, learning is entartaining and easy. Teaching is supported with visual materials and exercise methods which makes language information perennial for learners.This site has 13 languages from German to Dutch and Indonesian to Danish. It offers two level options: begginer and advanced. Learners can choose according to their level and enjoy learning a foreign language!








           Duolingo is based on teaching the target language with translation from the target language to native language. It is completely complimentary. It aims to teach learners with lots of practices. Usage of the site is simple and enjoyable. It is also available for mobile phones with android and IOS systems. The formation of the site is like a competitive game. They can collect points, level up and compete with each other. And also learners have the opportunity to get help from another users when they have a problem in understanding a matter.






          Livemocha is a social network for learning foreign language, or improving the language that you have already known. It is a useful, fast, practical and simple site. It includes English, German, Spanish, Chinese, French, Indian and more. It offers grammatical, listening, speaking and writing exercises. It has beginner and advanced levels for learners. It is an entartaining social network. Learners can argue about the issues that are problematic for them with other language learners or the native speakers of the target languages. One of the most useful features of the site is to create learning cards attached to your profile and recall them whenever you need.







8- Snappy Words ( http://www.snappywords.com/ )

          Snappywords can be defined as a different and entertaining way of using dictionary. Learners can look up a word and learn different forms of the words. The site is based on drawing connections to other related words of the target word. Learners can use this site without registering and installing a software. Besides, it is a visiual dictionary and completely free to use. This visual online dictionary is developed by Princeton University.






9-Memrise (http://www.memrise.com/ )

          The site is based on word practicing which uses the long term memory and short term memory techniques, in other words, learning is based on brain science. These techniques makes the words more permenant. It has a vast varierty of words and it is not only limited to English. Learners can start a course of a beginner level and ‘memrise’ words with practicing. Learning process is formed with 8 courses. This site is like a competitive game in teaching, learners collect points as they advance.







10- Vocabulary ( http://www.vocabulary.com/ )

          Vocabulary.com consists of three main parts: The Challenge, The Dictionary and Vocabulary Lists. Firstly, The Challenge allows students to learn by practicing. It presents random vocabulary questions with four options. Questions can vary from synonym/antonym to filling the blanks. Secondly, The Dictionary is fast, handy and offers examples of the target word in sentences. Lastly, Vocabulary Lists is a good opportunity for learners to create their own vocabulary lists, and find other users’ lists. ‘The Vocabulary.com Top 1000’, ‘100 Words Every High School Graduate Should Know’, ‘The Top 60 Most Common Academic Words’ are some of the useful lists for learners.








          Lexipedia is a simple dictionary site with drawing connections indicating the nouns, verbs, adverbs, adjectives, fuzzynyms, antonyms and synonyms of the target word. English, German, French, Spanish, Dutch and Italian are available in the site.






12-Bogglesworldesl (http://www.bogglesworldesl.com/)

          Boggleworldesl is a good helper for teachers teaching basics of the target language. It supplies different types of printible exersices like filling the blanks, optional tests, matching, flashcards, puzzles, crosswords, songs, verb lists, lesson plans and more. This site with a lot of content is created by a group of teachers from Asia and North America. 










         This site is for learning foreign language and improving the known language. Busuu is higly recommended for those who want to learn foreign language because it is one of the best of its kind. It is practical and easy to use for learners. It has exercises like filling the blanks, listening and speaking. Moreover, learners can discuss on the problematic issues in the target language with the facility of chatting with other learners. Busuu is available for android and IOS systems. 







14-Voxopop (http://www.voxopop.com/)

          Voxopop is a free voice-based online discussion site aiming for learners to practice and improve speaking, listening and pronounciation skills. This handy site enables learners to start discussions, create talkgropus and use verbal communication. Voxopop, developed by Dean Worth, creates a good social environment for learners from all over the world.








          Freerice.com is an interesting site for learning not only foreign language but also other subjects from  geography to chemistry. In language part, there are grammer and vocabulary exercises. The interesting thing is that for each correct answer the site donates 10 grains of rice through the World Food Programme to help the poor. Questions in the site are pretty easy for donators!
